After-School Programs
Students at the Edison K8 School have a number of options for formal and informal before- and after-school programs.
Jackson Mann Community Center Before- and After-School Program (K1-G5): The Jackson Mann Community Center runs an before- and after-school program on-site at the Edison K8 School for pre-kindergarten through grade five aged children. The weekly cost ranges between $60 and $100 (after-school program), $__ (before-school program), but there are subsidies available based on financial need. The morning program begins at 7:00 am; students proceed to the cafeteria to get a school breakfast at 8:15 am. The after-school program immediately follows school dismissal and continues to 6 pm. The children have various activities, as well as homework time. When local colleges are in session, there is a program where BC and/or BU undergraduates tutor the students on-site. No bus transportation is available at the end of the after-school program.

Edison K8 Shining Lights: The Linde Family Foundation has awarded a grant to the Edison K8 School to fund an after-school arts program starting in SY2011-2012. It is anticipated that this program will be open to all grades. There is likely to be a different arts theme for each afternoon -- visual arts; drama; music instruction; music ensembles; and dance -- from which students can choose to attend any or all afternoon programs. The exact hours of the program are still to be determined (probably one or one-and-a-half hours), and the possibility of a late bus has not been worked out.

College Success Academy: College Success Academy is a new after school program designed by the Steppingstone Foundation. The Edison K8 is fortunate to be one of only 2 Boston Public Schools piloting this program, designed especially for promising 4th graders in the Jackson/Mann and Edison K-8 Schools who want to go to college. This free program takes your child by the hand in 4th grade...and doesn't let go until she or he graduates from college.

The schedule and activities are similar to the on-site JMCC program, but also include swimming at least once per week. The YMCA has an annual membership fee as well as weekly fees for the after-school program.
